For more than a decade now, it is difficult for any player to break the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Ballon d’Or. The two living legends of world football have together won a total of 11 Ballons d’Or since 2008. However, the fact that Croatian midfielder Luka Modric made an exception in 2018 has shown the ability for the players to remaining overtaking Messi and Ronaldo is entirely possible.
In 2020, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is another prime example. Lewandowski could have gotten his hands on the prize that every player coveted if the Golden Ball award ceremony had not been canceled due to the Covid epidemic. This year, Karrim Benzema knows that he has a chance to snatch the prestigious title.
Modric wins Golden Ball 2018
Benzema played a supporting role during the nine years he played with Ronaldo at Real Madrid. But since the Portuguese striker moved to Juventus in 2018, Benzema has stepped up and become a leader in the attack of Los Blancos.
In the 2021/22 season, the French striker has 5 goals for Real and is currently leading the race for Pichichi. Benzema says he doesn’t put too much pressure on, but admits the Ballon d’Or is a goal of himself.
“The goal of winning the Ballon d’Or does not make me lose sleep, although it is a dream for every player,” Benzema said at a press conference before the match against Inter (2h00, September 16).

“What I want to do is help the team. Every player wants to win that award and so do I. But for me the Champions League is the first priority and that is my biggest pressure.”
“In my opinion, there is not any team that is considered a championship candidate. Because when on the field, you think this team will win but in the end the other team is the winner. We have a great force and we will fight for the championship,” Benzema affirmed.
Benzema is still maintaining excellent scoring form
Real is still the team that holds the record for the number of times to the top of Europe with 13 Champions League titles in history. Therefore, it is easy to see why they always set very high goals in this arena and with that comes the determination of the players.
Benzema also admitted he would love to play with Kylian Mbappe at club level, but Real failed to land the 23-year-old striker this summer. But in the opposite direction, Benzema also said that he was happy with the performance of young Brazilian star Vinicius Jr, who is booming under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti.
